Welcome to Homer, the final stop on our Alaskan road trip! The city of Peonies is an adorable seaside town nestled along the shores of Kachemak Bay. As the Halibut Fishing Capital of the World, Homer hosts incredible fishing opportunities, a panorama of mountains, white peaks, glaciers, and the famous Homer Spit.

On Route From Seward

Our route embarks west alongside the Kenai Penisula. Enjoy views of the turquoise waters of Kenai Lake in Cooper Landing, or pull over after the bridge to splash around or have a picnic by the water!

The route will then continue towards Soldotna, before descending along the Cook Inlet to North Americas Most Westerly Highway Point in Anchor Bay! Continue along to Homer Baycrest, where an overlook offers views of the glaciers surrounding Kachemak Bay.

Russian River Falls

At milepost 52 of the Sterling Highway is the Russian Lakes Trail. This 2 mile easy hike takes you to Russian Falls and is the perfect stop to stretch your legs on your way to Homer!

Ninilchik Russian Orthodox Church

As you drive through the town of Ninilchik, the Russian Orthodox Church is a great roadside photo opt! The church, built in 1901, is perched on the edge of a cliff, offering unbeatable views of the Cook Inlet.

Things To Do Around Homer

Homer is surrounded by 3 major national parks – Katmai National Park, Kachemak Bay State Park, and Lark Clark National Park. Each park offers incredible wildlife experiences. These areas are home to an abundance of different species. Visitors can observe animals like moose, wolves, whales, sea lions and otters in their natural habitats.

These parks are not accessible by Alaskan road, so the best way to get to them from Homer is by boat or plane on a tour or cruise!

If you want to escape Homer for the day, Seldovia is a small city with big charm, and certainly worth the water taxi ride to visit! Visitors can enjoy all that nature has to offer.

Stop by the visitor center to learn about the refuge’s past and present, or click here for a 360 tour! You can join a tour boat embarking to refuge islands with plenty of seabirds and sea lions, or walk along the short Beluga Slough Trailleading from the visitors center to Bishops Beach, a fantastic spot for tidepooling!

Known throughout Alaska as a vibrant artists haven, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the creative side of this scenic town!
